Tomorrow is Native American Day featuring many special events. Back by popular demand, the critically acclaimed Native American musical group, Spirit Wing, will give a unique performance combining storytelling and music using traditional Native American instruments between 10am and 1pm. The children’s area will feature Native American games and crafts. Children will have a chance to play shuttlecock, a Native American game enjoyed by Zuni children. They can also try their hand at tossing corn cob darts through a ring, a game ejoyed by Native American children throughout North America. At the art table, children will be able to make Native American leg rattles and practice weaving and stringing beads.
We are also very happy to welcome Robin Hoose of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania to the market tomorrow. The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania has worked the past two years in developing a fabulous exhibit at the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaelogy and Anthropology. The grand opening was September 13, 2008 and it will remain there for a minimum of one year. Robin will have information, educational materials and items for sale from the Lenape Trading Post.
Local game enthusiast, Craig, will also be back at the market tent teaching kids (and adults) how to play the ancient board game, Go. Click here to read the Wikipedia entry on the game.
This week’s recipes feature buffalo and squash, two native American foods. The first, Pumpkin Soup in a Pumpkin is perfect for the coming cool nights, the second, Stir-fried Buffalo and Broccoli will be delicious with the beautiful fall broccoli at the market this week.
Lil Red’s Kettle Corn and Betty’s Tasty Buttons will be at the market this week.
We have yet another special day at the market next week when we celebrate Oktoberfest! Look for more details in next week’s newsletter.
